What Was It? is a gothic short story that was first published in Harper’s Magazine in March 1859. O'Brien tells a story about the residents of a house in New York who encounter an invisible, seemingly blood-thirsty creature in one of the rooms. Once they manage to apprehend it, the residents attempt to study and learn more about the mysterious creature.
